The Hidden Risk of Treating Marketing as a Support Function

Many organisations still frame marketing as “support.” This perspective positions marketing as something that happens after decisions are made elsewhere. The risk is that marketing becomes reactive, chasing orders instead of informing strategy.

In reality, marketing is a sensing organ: it reads the market, customer behaviour and competitive moves, then feeds those insights back into the business. When marketing is relegated to support, you lose that feedback loop. Teams may miss changes in demand, reputational risks or emerging opportunities.

Elevating marketing to a strategic partner ensures it has a seat at the decision table and influences product, service and policy choices. Companies that do this are more adaptive and resilient.
